HK grid cake stories
Hong Kong Waffle also call “grid cake” (格仔餅) is a very popular street snack sold by hawkers in Hong Kong. Most of us will find one stall nearby when we walk out from schools in the old days. It is cooked in a larger waffle mould, round in shape and divided into four quarters. Generally Hong Kong style waffle is spread with butter, peanut butter, white sugar or condensed milk, then folded into a semi circle, wrapped in a paper bag.
There are many variations based on the type of waffle iron and recipe used nowadays. Waffles are eaten throughout the world, particularly in Belgium, which has over a dozen regional varieties, but when you visit Hong Kong, don't forget to try one classic Hong Kong style waffle.
One characteristic you will see is that the Hong Kong style with our own culture will be five time faster making than the one in your own country. Making a waffle will never involve complicated process, a hawker will do it quick with simple ingredients yet the food is full of taste and texture, he will never disappoint single one of the customers who line up in the queue in Hong Kong.
